What we did

A project working with St Cuthbert’s Hospice

The project took place over several months leading up to Dieing Matters week 2016. Creative Youth Opportunities partnered with St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham to create an outdoor exhibition that would explore the lives of people with terminal illness helping them to capture their stories and memories so they could be shared and celebrated with friends.

Young People from Creative Youth Opportunities and from Durham Johnston School were supported by our creative team to first of all carryout research with patients accessing rh day servcies at the Hospice, they then created art work that depicted and celebrated the lives and memories of the poeple they had met.

The installation took place over a weekend during Dieing Matters week and was installed into the Gardens in the grounds of the hospice. Families weer able to enjoy a walk through the gardens where the artwork served as talking points for them to reminisce and connect wth their loved ones.

CYO created a bespoke project for my class of 23 year 4 children. They were reliable, communicated effectively with the children and myself were extremely well resourced and the final product's were impressive 3D sculptures. I found the project to be a rewarding opportunity and the children are really proud of what they have produced. This initial sculpture project has been the start of a fruitful working relationship with this amazing local organisation. They have taken this project to a new, exciting level, introducing the children to 'real' artists who have been inspired by and even created local landmarks, making the children's work but relevant and valued. We will certainly involve CYO in future art projects and are already at looking for ways we can work to create new art work for our library. Thank you so much for your inspiration and input.
