Missing Women

We worked with artists including Leanne Pearce, Jilly Keast-Johnson and Lady Kitt and with the help of amazing young poeple and young parents we imagines who these wmoen might have been. In an ambitious exhbition we placed the 5 women of the family of Jacob back into the centre of the family as the 5, 2metre tall portarits stood proudly in the great hall at the castle.

What we did

Our Arts Council England funded project was the first of ots scale that Creative Youth Opportunities had worked on. We partnered with The Auckland Project and got to work with some amazing artists and other youth groups and organisations.

Missing Women was our ambitious project to put the ‘misisng women’ back into the story.. into the frame… into the limelight.

In Auckland Castle a colletion of Zurburan paintings are hung in the dining room, they are of Jacob and his sons… but where are the women the family MUST have had?

Meanwhile in the nearby art gallery in Bishops Auckland Town Hall everyone female who had taken part in the project had a self portait hanging on the wall alongside replica’s of the amazing work created.

CYO created a bespoke project for my class of 23 year 4 children. They were reliable, communicated effectively with the children and myself were extremely well resourced and the final product's were impressive 3D sculptures. I found the project to be a rewarding opportunity and the children are really proud of what they have produced. This initial sculpture project has been the start of a fruitful working relationship with this amazing local organisation. They have taken this project to a new, exciting level, introducing the children to 'real' artists who have been inspired by and even created local landmarks, making the children's work but relevant and valued. We will certainly involve CYO in future art projects and are already at looking for ways we can work to create new art work for our library. Thank you so much for your inspiration and input.
